What is so great about photoluminescent egress systems?
1. Rechargeable – No External Power Source or Batteries Required
Photoluminescent egress systems are continuously being charged by ambient light that is already in use in your building such as fluorescent, incandescent, or halogen lamps—as well as natural sunlight. When the system is fully charged most photoluminescent systems will remain light for 8 to 10 hours in the dark. The strength of the material charge depends on the type of available light, how long the light is on, and the intensity of the light.

2. Low Maintenance
Unlike battery powered emergency light systems, photoluminescent exit systems do not have to be tested monthly. According to NFPA 101 Life Safety Code:
NFPA 101 22.214.171.124 – Exit signs connected to or provided with a battery-operated emergency illumination source, shall be tested and maintained in accordance with 7.9.3
NFPA 101 7.9.3 – A functional test shall be conducted on every required emergency lighting system at 30-day intervals for not less than 30 seconds. An annual test shall be conducted on every required battery-powered emergency lighting system for not less than 1.5 hours. Equipment shall be fully operational for the duration of the test. Written records of visual inspection and tests shall be kept by the owner for inspection by the authority having jurisdiction.
3. Long Lasting
The typical life expectancy for a photoluminescent system is 25 years, when applied in compliance with the installation instructions.
In the 1993 World Trade Center attack there was a failure of the emergency generator that was supposed to power the emergency lighting circuit. Building occupants were left in the dark, without any idea which direction to go to get to the emergency exits. Following this failure of the emergency system, the city of New York decided something had to change. They passed Local Law 26, requiring installation of photoluminescent emergency markings in any building over 75 feet high. This lead to the 2004 installation of photoluminescent epoxy paint in the stairwells of the World Trade Center. Seven years after its installation this paint helped save the lives of many during the 9/11 attacks, exemplifying the reliability and durability of photoluminescent egress systems.
