Recent news from The Joint Commission discusses an initiative to conduct life safety and environment of care surveys completely virtually. Currently being considered by the CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), the program would rely on virtual interviews, digital technology, mobile cameras (e.g. Go Pro, etc.) and cloud-based sharing of documentation to ensure compliance via “remote inspection.”
First conceived in March when the pandemic escalated in the US, the approach has been piloted at two facilities, and results are pointing toward the success of the program in performing thorough and meaningful compliance assessments while still maintaining the recommended safety practices of social distancing, limited travel, and reduced group sizes.
