Who inspects and repairs your fire doors? Many believe inspecting and repairing fire doors in-house will save time and money. But often it is not that simple and the code can be difficult to fully understand. Hiring a specialty fire door inspector can help to ensure your fire doors are compliant the first time. Here are 4 Benefits of Outsourcing Your Fire Door Inspections:

1. Simply meet NFPA 80 “Qualified Person” requirements
According to NFPA 80 Section 5.2.3.1 – Acceptance testing of fire door and window assemblies shall be performed by a qualified person with knowledge and understanding of the operating components of the type of assembly being subject to testing.

A Qualified Person is, “A person who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate, professional standing, or skill, and who by knowledge, training, and experience, has demonstrated the ability to deal with the subject matter, the work, or the project.” According to NFPA 80 Section 3.3.95

These strict requirements can make it very difficult to do your fire door inspections and repairs in-house. The Door Inspectors at PREVENT Life Safety have years of experience and are recognized as Qualified Persons by DHI (Door & Hardware Institute) and are led by an Intertek Qualified Personnel (IQP) Fire Door Inspector.

2. Work With True Experts
Individuals who have taken the time to become certified by FDAI, Intertek or any other organization, truly are experts when it comes to fire doors. Certified door inspectors separate themselves from the competition by going beyond and choosing a program with more stringent checks and balances.

In addition to receiving high level and continuous training, fire door inspectors are constantly learning on the job day in and day out. With fire doors as their specialty, fire door inspectors work with these doors on a daily basis, and are familiar with many common issues. These inspectors have seen almost every possible fire door deficiency, and can identify and resolve them easily.

3. Ultimately Save Time & Money
Using an outside contractor ensures that your fire doors are inspected and repaired correctly by experts in the industry. Depending on how many doors your facility has, door inspections can take hours upon hours. Specialty fire door inspectors are familiar with common fire door deficiencies, allowing them to arrive prepared with the tools and supplies necessary to quickly inspect and repair your doors, saving you time.

The per door leaf rate is usually equivalent to the hourly rate of an in-house employee. Our experienced technicians have a trained eye, and can easily spot deficiencies to get the job done faster, ultimately saving you money. In addition, we often receive volume discount pricing on parts and supplies necessary for repair. We repair hundreds of doors each month, allowing us to purchase parts at favorable prices. Having a third party come in and inspect your fire doors can give you back your time to use on other projects and save you money.

4. Ensure Your Documentation Meets NFPA 80 Requirements
NFPA 80 Section 5.2.2.4 requires, “A record of all inspections and testing shall be provided that includes, but is not limited to, the following information:

Date of Inspection
Name of facility
Address of facility
Name of person(s) performing inspections and testing
Company name and address of inspecting company
Signature of inspector of record
Individual record of each inspected and tested fire door assembly
Opening identifier and location of each inspected and tested fire door assembly
Type and description of each inspected and tested fire door assembly
Verification of visual inspection and functional operation”
Listing of deficiencies in accordance with 5.2.3 section 5.3 and section 5.4
PREVENT Life Safety’s fire door reports easily meet these requirements, and come complete with a map of all fire door locations in your facility. Our detailed documentation arrives promptly after your inspection organized, easy-to-reference report that is sure to meet AHJ expectations.
